By Philippa Jones
Commercial relationships between Australian lobster exporters and Chinese importers vary across the industry. Transactions, however, tend to occur quickly. A deal to ship lobsters that is struck in the morning will see lobsters shipped that night. During peak periods, exporters must move their product as their tanks fill, placing pressure on them to make deals fast. In these circumstances, exporters are generally not positioned to demand where their product is consigned. This projects goal was to assess the commercial opportunities and constraints to establishing direct trade of rocklobster to China.
